Compare Business Gas Prices and Suppliers

Compare business gas prices from a wide range of UK suppliers. Our trusted partner Bionic can help you find the right energy deal for your business.

Which business energy suppliers do we work with?

We compare 22 business energy providers, including well-known companies from the ‘Big Six’ and smaller ones that might offer you great deals on gas and electricity for your business.

Should I Be Worried About the Rise in Business Gas Rates?

When wholesale energy prices go up, it usually means higher gas prices for businesses too. Other factors that affect gas costs include supply and demand, currency prices, and government fees. Many businesses choose fixed-rate tariffs to protect against price increases during their contract period. When you ask for a quote, we can help you understand the available tariffs and find the best deal for your business.

Should I change business gas suppliers?

There are three main reasons people might switch business gas suppliers.

Save money
Most people know that switching home gas suppliers can save money. The same goes for your business. By switching your business gas supplier, you could save hundreds of pounds with the right tariff.

Get better service
Does your current deal give you the service you need? If you’ve ever needed customer support, were you satisfied with the experience?

Reflect your business ethos
Would switching to a green energy provider better align with your company’s values?

How does switching business gas work?

Much like switching your home supply, it takes very little effort. Comparing business gas is quick and easy.
Just follow the steps below:

• Enter your business postcode, and we’ll use smart digital data to get everything we need to provide a quote.
• Experts from our partner, Bionic, will analyze the market to find the best energy tariff for your needs and give you a quick call to discuss it.
• If you decide to switch providers, Bionic will support you through the process and handle future renewals.
• Remember to pay any outstanding gas bills or arrange for a refund if you’re in credit, and don’t forget to take a final meter reading.

Your new supplier will inform you about the changeover date and provide details like the payment method and schedule. Make sure to verify these details. You can’t sign up with a new business energy supplier until the switching window opens, usually one to six months before your current contract ends. The new contract will start once the current one ends.

If you’re unsure when your switching window begins, don’t worry. When you switch with us, we monitor this for you and compare the best business energy deals, so you can focus on running your business.

What are the different business gas tariff options?

When it comes to choosing a tariff for your business gas, there are two main types to consider:

Fixed rate tariff
With a fixed-rate tariff, you’ll pay a set price per kWh for the length of your contract, usually one to four years. This is popular because you know exactly what you’ll be paying each month, and these tariffs are often more competitive.
However, you may be locked into this rate for a long time and won’t be able to switch suppliers until you’re in the renewal window, typically six months before your contract ends.

Flexible rate tariff
With a bulk payment tariff, you pay for your gas in advance. This can be a good choice for larger companies with high gas usage because they often get lower rates.
Most flexible rate tariffs let you switch suppliers with just 30 days’ notice, which is great for short-term needs, like a pop-up restaurant. However, prices can vary based on the market, and flexible tariffs can sometimes be more expensive than fixed-rate ones.

Other business gas tariffs include:
Here are the types of rates you might encounter
Variable rate: Your costs will go up or down based on market prices and conditions.
Extended rate: Some suppliers offer a good rate if you extend your contract after it ends.
Pass-through rate: You get a fixed wholesale rate for stability, but other costs might change.
Deemed rate: If your contract ends or you move, you’ll be placed on this standard rate, which is usually higher. However, you can switch to a new supplier at any time without a penalty.

FAQs

Can I switch suppliers if my business gas is supplied by an Independent Gas Transporter (IGT)?
Yes, you can switch gas suppliers even if your business gas comes from an IGT instead of the National Grid. The process might take a bit longer, but it’s still possible. IGTs are less common, so their standing charges are usually higher, which can make your overall costs more. When you get quotes, they might not include these extra IGT charges, so you’ll need to add them yourself.

Some larger gas suppliers may cover these additional charges, so it’s a good idea to check this before you commit to a new supplier.

Can I get a smart meter for my business?
Yes, if your small business uses less than 732 MWh of gas per year, you might be able to get a smart meter through the government’s smart meter rollout. Smart meters help you track your gas use more accurately and could help lower your gas bills. They send readings automatically to your supplier via a mobile signal, so you get accurate bills and only pay for the energy you use.

I’m on a fixed rate tariff – can I switch before my contract ends?
Check your contract terms to see what happens if you end it early. Usually, you can only switch when your contract ends or during the renewal period, which is 60-120 days before the end date. Your supplier should notify you about this time frame so you can explore your options. Some suppliers may allow you to switch early, but they might charge a penalty. This fee could cancel out any savings you might get from switching.

What’s a deemed contract?
If you move to a new business location or continue using gas after your current contract ends without setting up a new one, you might be put on a “deemed” contract. Deemed contracts usually have higher rates than standard tariffs. To avoid paying more, try to switch to a new tariff as soon as you can.

Energy regulator Ofgem says that many small businesses on deemed contracts pay about twice as much per unit of gas compared to those on agreed contracts. The good news is you can switch from a deemed contract anytime without needing to give notice or pay a fee.

What is microbusiness?
A microbusiness is a small business that meets these criteria:
Uses less than 293,000 kWh of gas per year
Has fewer than 10 employees (or their full-time equivalent)
Has an annual turnover of less than €2 million

Can I get a business gas tariff if I work from home?
If you work from home, you can only get a business gas tariff if over 50% of your energy use is for your business. If not, you’ll be on a domestic tariff. Even if you qualify for a business tariff, a domestic tariff might be cheaper if your energy use is low. It’s a good idea to compare both options to find the best deal for you.

Are business gas rates cheaper than domestic gas?
Business gas rates can be cheaper than domestic rates because businesses usually use more gas. However, businesses pay a higher VAT rate of 20%, compared to 5% for homes. They also must pay a Climate Change Levy, which is 0.672 p/kWh for gas.

What’s green business gas?
Green gas comes from eco-friendly sources like plants or animal waste. Unlike green electricity, green gas is still developing and might not be available everywhere, so we’ll need your postcode to check.

Some experts debate how green gas really is based on the entire production process. If green gas isn’t an option, consider a supplier that supports environmental projects or donates to them.
